Participates w/ the Health Care Team in delivering quality & customer focused health care to patients in a manner that reflects KP's mission, vision & values. Provides technical & administrative support & services to registered nurses, unit managers, physicians, & allied health personnel. As appropriate to the position scope of authorized duties the Unit Specialist is expected to have critical thinking skills, attention to detail, time management, problem solving & customer relations skills in a fast paced environment in order to meet patient needs & contribute to the positive care experience & work environment.
Essential Functions:
- Manages electronic medical records including, accurate processing of admission, transfer & or discharge/orders.
- Interacts w/ various departments w/in & outside of KP to facilitate the coordination of care for patients during hospitalization & post hospitalization.
- Handling of important documentation, i.e., Medicare letter, implant cards, Advance Directives, etc.
- Utilizes clinical information systems & other applications to facilitate optimal service delivery.
- Ensures confidentiality of all patient & organization records & information.
- Orders materials & supplies for unit.
- Monitors physician orders & notes in the electronic medical record & completes tasks w/in scope of authorized duties.
- Communicates w/ Bed Board the status of clean & dirty rooms.
- Coordination of Meds to the Med room when they arrive from Pharmacy.
- Manages multi-line phone system for the Unit/Dept.
- Supports Unit/Dept. down time procedure when needed.
- Maintains the Communication binder on the Unit/Dept.
- Maintains, tracks inventory & performs limited administration for various electronic communication devices, equipment or supplies as specified in hospital policy & procedures.
- Acts as a communication liaison for the Unit/Dept. greeting new patients & their families/visitors.
- Communicates & interacts to exchange information needed to support patient care goals & outcomes, including patients, families & visitors.
- Provides patient care communication to registered nurses, unit managers, physicians & allied health personnel.
- Resolves patient & visitor questions & directs to the appropriate resource.
- Communicates & coordinates w/ other Units/Depts.as needed.
- Performs appropriate daily activities to start workflow per team agreements & procedures.
- Demonstrates flexibility & ability to effectively reprioritize workflow to handle urgent/emergent demands of the team.
- Reports errors, near misses or other hazards in a timely manner per established procedures.
- Seeks assistance w/ duties when unable to perform safely, lacks training or outside scope of authorized duties.
- Completes annual competency assessments & trainings by meeting organizational standards & expectations.
- Assist in development & implementation of unit policies & procedures.
- Assist w/ the on-boarding of new hires/transfers and/or validating peer's skills.
- Demonstrates initiative to maintain knowledge & skills related to Unit/Dept. clinical area & contributes new ideas to assist team in achieving departmental/regional quality & service goals/initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned, consistent w/ the job description.
Qualifications:

Qualifications:
- Minimum one (1) year of customer service experience.
- Previous computer experience.
- High school graduate or GED.
- Training and education in medical office related positions.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks in a busy environment in a calm and detailed manner.
- Demonstrated excellent communication and time management skills.
- Demonstrates customer relations skills including conflict resolution.
- Ability to communicate and exchange information, resolve questions/problems.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work without direct supervision and as part of a team.
- Self-directed.
- Typing skill of 25 WPM.
- Knowledge of computers and business office applications, (word processing, email, etc.).
Preferred
Qualifications:
- One (1) year of prior experience as a Hospital Unit Specialist, preferred.
- Experience with Business Machines, preferred.
- Experience in Purchasing and Materials Management, preferred.
- Health Unit Coordinators Certification, preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology, preferred.
- Training and education in medical office related positions, preferred.
- Familiarity with current electronic medical records system, preferred.
- Typing skill of 40 WPM, preferred.
External hires must pass a background check/drug screen.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
